…on the second day of Christmas my green friend gave to me…two Ecobees…and a live Christmas tree!
My green friend knows I have been working on making a more energy-efficient home over the years and am currently somewhat of a “newbie” in adding smart features that add to the energy efficiency. I live in a mid-century concrete block house with an addition in the 1970’s that increased the square footage from 1110 to 1708. When I replaced my heating and cooling system it was cost prohibitive to combine the 2nd HVAC system with the first so I have 2 programmable thermostats. At first I was unhappy about 2 systems but over time I realized it was like having a zoned system as one conditions the bedroom area and the other system conditions the living and kitchen area. Those programmable thermostats worked well over the past 10 years but recently my green friend has been touting the benefits of the Ecobee3 Lite and the additional features it provides.
The Ecobee3 Lite is Energy Star rated advertising it can save up to 23% on your annual heating and cooling bill. While my programmable thermostats reduced my bill already that was not the feature that intrigued me. In the past thermostats would regulate the temperature of your house based on its’ location so you might feel hot and cold areas in your house which is what I experienced in my own home. With the Ecobee3 Lite I can add as many room sensors as I need which regulates the temperature based on occupancy of the room! So if both bedroom doors are closed at night the temperature will be adjusted based on the room itself instead of the hallway!
As if that wasn’t enough these thermostats will show the current weather conditions (yes, they are wi-fi connected) and can be adjusted on your smartphone while you are away from home or on vacation. They do have a vacation setting as well for peace of mind when you travel.
Another feature I am excited to see…I know not everyone gets excited about this…are the energy reports you can read on the thermostats along with tips to improve energy savings! I am always curious what activities end up using more energy.
Receiving 2 Ecobee3 Lites on the second day of a green Christmas was a very appreciated gift. My green friend also mentioned that as a FPL customer one is able to enjoy a $40 discount on each thermostat (2 is the limit). So if anyone reading this post is interested in purchasing an EcoBee3 Lite or Ecobee4 you need to buy one or two before this offer ends. Follow this link to head to the FPL website. I do plan on writing a post about my DIY installation and performance of the Ecobees after they are installed. If you have one of these thermostats I would appreciate hearing your feedback so be sure to leave a comment!
If this is the first post you have read of my Twelve Days of a Green Christmas and you can’t figure out what the heck I am writing about or why I’m writing about the Twelve Days after Christmas click here to read how this all began. I hope you join me tomorrow for the Third Day of a Green Christmas!
