The Twelve Days of a Green Christmas – Eighth Day

…on the eighth day of Christmas my green friend gave to me…eight motion lights…seven chakra gems…six solar panels…five milkweed plants…four pints of milk…three wax wraps…two re-purposed pallets…and a smart ther-mo-stat!

First of all…Happy New Year!  My wishes are for you to experience a very healthy and happy 2016!

Wow…I’m starting to get a little winded after figuring out the eighth day verse, are you? Ahhh, eight motion lights…actually motion sensor lights. What a great energy saving gift!

These motion sensor/occupancy sensor switches are wonderful for a multitude of uses! Do you have family members who never turn off the lights when they leave a room or maybe it’s you 🙂  I am one of those who turns lights off but I use these motion sensor switches for guests and security. I installed one in my foyer in case I forgot to turn the light on for a guest or someone is entering my house without an invitation. Another one in the guest bathroom that allows the light to turn on automatically when a guest enters and eliminates any fumbling for the light switch. One in the hallway if a guest needs to use the restroom in the middle of the night. My laundry room is a step down and has access to the backyard so that was another place that this switch works well. I can always see the step when it’s dark or it turns on if an uninvited guest enters.

Not only do these motion sensor switches provide ease of use and security but they also help reduce electric consumption. In 2013 an estimate cost of $38 billion a year, lighting represented the largest source of electricity consumption in U.S. commercial buildings. Now that these occupancy sensor switches are available for residential use you need to determine if they would be a good application for your home.

I don’t worry about someone leaving the lights on in my house but I find them valuable for the security aspect and convenience for guests.  They are rather affordable and may be a perfect solution for your situation.  Do you use these motion sensors now?  If so, how have you found them to be most helpful?

If this is the first post you have read of my green rendition of the Twelve Days of a Christmas and you can’t figure out what the heck I am writing about or why I’m writing about the Twelve Days after Christmas, click here to read how all this started.  I hope you join me tomorrow for the Ninth Day of a Green Christmas!
