The Twelve Days of a Green Christmas – third day


On the third day of Christmas my green friend gave to me…three wax wraps…two re-purposed pallets…and a smart ther-mo-stat!

Yesterday I learned about the origin of the universal recycle symbol, “up-cycling”, “down-cycling” and the Mobius strip through my research.  Today I’m talking about wax wraps?  No, I’m not totally crazy, but the phrase “3 beeswax wraps” just didn’t quite fit the melody so I shortened it to “3 wax wraps”.

I stopped using plastic containers, plastic bags, teflon cookware, etc many years ago and continue searching for alternative storage ideas like cotton bags, glass containers, etc. Most people now know it is unhealthy to heat food in plastic containers, use teflon coated cookware or cover dishes with plastic wrap to heat food yet so many continue to do it anyway probably because they believe it is political, environmental propaganda, as one radio talk show host would have us believe.

As the Ecology Center in California points out, plastics are not only unsafe during the production, the chemicals used to make plastic desirable have negative effects for the environment as well as humans.  According to several research studies, some of the chemical effects include:

  • Direct toxicity, as in the cases of lead, cadmium, and mercury
  • Carcinogens, as in the case of diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP)
  • Endocrine disruption, which can lead to cancers, birth defects, immune system supression and developmental problems in children.

It has been shown that chemicals like PVC, phthalates, polystyrene, PET and other lesser publicized chemicals actually migrate into the food that is wrapped, heated or stored in plastic. Storage bags, plastic water bottles, disposable hot drink cups, foam trays and many of the containers used to package our foods contribute to our bodies’ intake of toxic chemicals.  We all have choices and I choose to control as many toxic chemicals entering my environment and body as possible.

I really did receive 3 reusable beeswax food wraps and had no clue what they were hence an afternoon of research. They are made by “abeego” and their mission is to “keep food alive” with better options for storage.  abeego has created a product that is an organic hemp and cotton fabric coated with a recipe of beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil. The sheets are reusable and remain fairly stiff so cleaning them is a breeze!  You can store cheese, herbs, veggies, breads as well as dishes containing foods by using these wraps.  Right now I am trying cheese and romaine lettuce wrapped in these sheets and so far they are doing a better job that storing in wax paper or cotton produce bags.  My true test will be when I buy an avocado at the produce stand tomorrow and wrap it after it is cut 🙂  

The abeego website (I wish they would show the pronunciation for us dummies) is well-designed and has the reader chuckling with the interspersed humor about Toni and Colin on the “our story” and “how it works” pages.

I almost forgot to mention the fragrance that filled my kitchen when I opened the sheets. It was so luscious that I just kept picking up the sheets and smelling them!  Also, it’s important to note that their “waste” products from manufacturing are not wasted, they make abeego twist ties to be used instead of wire twist ties!

So on this third day of Christmas my green friend gave to me, three wax wraps that seem to be a perfect storage solution for my food!  Have you tried these beeswax wraps?  Share your thoughts below.
