The Twelve Days of a Green Christmas…Fourth Day…

On the fourth day of Christmas my green friend gave to me…four faucet aerators, three large rain-barrels, two new thermostats and a live…Christmas tree!

EPA’s WaterSense Label

Faucet aerators are an easy, inexpensive way to reduce the water flow from your faucets without replacing with low-flow plumbing fixtures.  I found several aerators online for less than $4 each.

According to EPA’s WaterSense partnership program: ” WaterSense labeled bathroom sink faucets and accessories can reduce a sink’s water flow by 30 percent or more without sacrificing performance”.  I switched to WaterSense shower-heads a couple years ago and have not noticed any difference.

Water-efficient fixtures and accessories require third-party certification in order to bear the WaterSense label.   The amount of flow is usually stamped on the outside of the aerator.  They are simply installed by unscrewing the existing screen filter with a similar product with a more sophisticated filter system to reduce the flow of water.  Of course this doesn’t take the place of fixing a leaking faucet or turning off the water while you brush your teeth, but it will certainly help!  It is estimated that installing faucet aerators can save you up to 500 gallons of water per year which, in turn  will also add life to your water heater.

“If every household in the United States installed WaterSense labeled bathroom sink faucets or faucet accessories, we could save more than $350 million in water utility bills and more than 60 billion gallons of water annually—enough to meet public water demand in Miami for more than 150 days! In addition, U.S. homes could avoid about $600 million in energy costs for heating water”, according to WaterSense.  So make it a New Year’s resolution to invest less than $50 and save up to 500 gallons of water a year with this simple upgrade to your existing faucets!
