Proposition 37’s Defeat…Yet Still a Victory!

Although Proposition 37 (“right to know” labeling) was defeated on the California ballot last week there are a number of positive outcomes from this amendment even being on the ballot!  One of the biggest victories of this proposition is the amount of information and awareness that has now spread across our country!  Narrowly defeated (4.8 million votes) 53%  to 47%  (4.3 million votes) I think this speaks volumes about consumers’ right to know!

Imagine…Monsanto spent over $40 million dollars (5.5 – 1 ratio) in a campaign against labeling genetically engineered (GE/GMO) ingredients in our food while grass-root efforts through non-profit organizations like Organic Consumers Association, Green America, Dr. Mercola and many others worked with much less resources for their campaigns.  Word spread by mouth, email and the internet as consumers became more health-conscious and concerned about the effects from GE/GMOs for their well-being.

The fact that 60 other countries require the labeling of GE/GMOs on ingredient labels just shows how Big Food companies and Big Ag companies are manipulating consumers’ right to know what they eat!  Perhaps this narrow defeat in California brings to light the fact more consumers/voters are beginning to realize that Big Money regulates our government?  Another victory was in San Juan County, Washington where 61% of the citizens voted to ban the propagation or growing of genetically modified plants or animals anywhere in the county with their Proposition 2012-4.

The “Right to Know” efforts are not over by any means!  Organic Consumers Association, Green America and other grass-roots organizations are forging ahead with momentum as well as individuals like myself.  There are more websites and blogs disseminating information about GMOs, the risks/side-effects and your well-being.  Petitions to the FDA are still circulating.  I like the JustLabelIt.org/ website that is clean, simple to read and loaded with facts as well as the ability to sign the FDA petition that  you want the right to know what ingredients are in your food. I especially like the page for consumer resources with articles about GMOs from all over the world.  The NonGMOProject.org website is another good one for more information.  If you don’t want to read all the information but feel strongly that you want to be able to make your own decisions about the food you eat, follow this link to sign the FDA petition.
So what was a defeat for Proposition 37 in California is a victory for the rest of us!

  1. Awesome. The Supermarkets dont need to fear this: they’ll supply wevhtaer it is that flies off the shelves. Its in their interest to encourage consumers to particpate fully in the supply chain this way.I wonder if they get this?

    • Thanks for your comment Sara. I almost think it’s more a matter of the fear of repercussion from the food giants like Coca Cola, Pepsico, Kellogg’s, General Mills, etc. who support non-labeling of GEs. Maybe they won’t sell their products to that store or chain at a super low price which would cut into the store’s profits or some other stronghold measure. Yes, it is definitely all about money but it also has a lot to do with who you are “in bed with”. So many seem to think there are not enough of us to make a difference, but that is so untrue as proven by the close defeat of Proposition 37.
