Do You Know About The 2012 Farm Bill?

If you’ve read many of my posts you’ve probably figured out I am passionate about pesticide/ GMO-free food and produce.  Because of my feelings about the food I eat, I read a lot and follow bills that are somewhat obscure to most people.

Did you know that the Farm Bill is modified and voted on by Congress only once every 5 years?  That seems to be the reason healthy food has taken the back-seat for decades…the large companies making millions of dollars with the sugary snacks and unhealthy foods have always lobbied with the most success in the past, while small farmers have not had the resources to compete nor has any group tried to organize the masses to help change any policies.

What began as a collaboration between students and faculty members at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969, the Union of Concerned Scientists (Citizens and Scientists for Environmental Solutions), a non-profit organization out of Cambridge, MA, has been working hard to educate citizens interested in learning more and effecting change.  Here’s the question they pose: “Ever wonder why corn chips and sugary drinks cost less than carrots and squash? In large part, it’s because government policies make the wrong foods cheaper and more abundant. Billions of dollars in federal subsidies give processed foods an unfair advantage over fruits, vegetables, pasture-raised meats, and other healthy foods.”

If you are interested in learning more about what the current proposed Farm Bill before Congress means to your health, your food and your environment and an analysis by scientists, please consider registering for the free webinar on June 14, 2012.  I registered because I want to be informed when I contact my representatives about the Farm Bill.  We only have one chance every 5 years so if your health is important to you think about taking one hour of time to listen to scientists and the truth about what you eat!  Read more about UCS, the webinar and register by clicking here…
