Win 2 Tickets to the Beach Boys Concert May 2, 2012!

Win 2 tickets to the Beach Boys concert at the St. Augustine Amphitheater (our fabulous outdoor concert venue) on May 2, 2012!

How?  Just add your comment below about what you did to celebrate Earth Day 2012 and you will be entered into the drawing…tickets only, no transportation.

My celebration: yesterday I planted a small tree that will grow to provide shade.  Today began with rain throughout the morning…my friends and I almost decided against doing the 1st Annual Tour de Farm trek.  As the rain let up we got in the car with “bumper-shoots” in hand.  Last year’s initial Tour de Farm event, organized by First Coast Slow Food ,was a huge success with over 1600 attending (only 300 were expected) and this year’s event was even better with chefs from the areas finest restaurants teaming with local farmers to provide delectable dishes made from the farm’s produce.

Roxy, Joe and me at the Old Florida Museum in Hastings, FL.

Tater Farms in Hastings had some wonderful produce along with samples of Florida peaches and a fabulous cabbage slaw.  A local beekeeper Gayle, with Beautiful Honey, offered samples of a scrumptious honeyed peach cake!  While in Hastings we stopped at the Old Florida Museum, an original train stop and depot for the Henry Flagler Railroad loaded with vintage artifacts from the era.

Another stop was Blue Sky Farms where we sampled some incredible potatoes…a curried purple potato prepared by the chef at the Purple Olive restaurant, a twice baked fingerling potato with blue cheese filling and a hot potato salad…all very delicious! The University of Florida’s Putnam County Agricultural Center had u-pick blueberries, an exhibit of Verti-Gro‘s vertical hydroponic growing systems, which were fascinating, as well as their own vertical produce gardens.

We ended the day at the KYV Farm in northwest St. Johns County.  KYV (a CSA farm) had some beautiful carrots, kohlrabi, arugala, wax and green beans and the most incredible Nicoise vegetable salad prepared by the chef from the Sawgrass Marriott hotel in Ponte Vedra!  After visiting this farm for the first time I plan to learn more about CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and joining to enjoy more of their tasty produce.  The Pie in the Sky ( a local effort to provide services to the needy) ladies were out of their fund-raising pies (they made 40 last year and 80 this year) and plan to make even more next year!  I almost forgot about all the yummy, local datil pepper products from salsa to marinade to jams that were available at several of the markets.  At the end of the day I arrived home with fresh cabbage, peaches, sweet onions, wax beans, several recipes and a couple tired feet!

So, that’s how I spent EarthDay 2012…what did you do…and don’t forget…you can keep celebrating EarthDay every day!

  1. I did work in my garden early in the day and got my soil ready for some new herbs. The temperature was 97 by 10 am here in Phoenix so outdoors went by the wayside. I finished a closet project and now it feels clean and healthy in there.
